On Tuesday, Rishi Sunak addressed the UK for the first time, vowing to “fix” the mistakes made by his predecessor Liz Truss.

Sunak did pay tribute to Truss by praising her “restlessness” and her “noble aim” to improve economic growth in the UK.

“Some mistakes were made, not borne of ill-will or bad intentions – quite the opposite in fact – but mistakes none the less,” Sunak said.

Sunak took to the podium at Downing Street with a somber expression and no supporters present said that the UK is currently “facing a profound economic crisis” and there were “difficult decisions” on the horizon.

Sunak said he would tackle these issues with “compassion” and “to place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda.”

“The government I lead will not leave the next generation, your children and grandchildren, with a debt to settle that we were too weak to pay ourselves,” Sunak added.

Sunak confirmed on Twitter that he had spoken to US President Joe Biden.

“The United States and the United Kingdom are the closest of allies. I look forward to working together with @POTUS to enhance stability across the world and continue our leading role in support of the people of Ukraine.”

He also made contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to confirm the UK’s continued support towards Ukraine.

“A privilege to speak to the President of Ukraine @ZelenskyyUa this evening. Both he and the Ukrainian people can count on the UK’s continued solidarity and support. We will always stand with Ukraine.”
