Hillary Clinton and VP Harris campaign for NY Gov. Hochul
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and current Vice President Kamala Harris turned up to campaign for Kathy Hochul, who is running against Republican candidate Lee Zeldin for Governor of New York.
The event was held at the all-female Barnard College on Thursday and was advertised as a “women’s rally.” The event focused on the fact that Hochul could make history by being elected the first female Governor of New York.
“We’re going to need people in the state house and at local levels who have the courage to stand up and push back against what is happening. And in that way, who is your governor matters,” Harris told the crowd.
“As the governor said, you witnessed a lot of history on the stage this afternoon,” Harris said to Hochul, adding, “We may be the first, but we are committed to not being the last.”
“The Republicans make no secret about what they want,” Clinton said. “They actually say the quiet part out loud. And Lee Zeldin and the Republicans, along with Trump and their allies, are literally fighting tooth and nail to turn back the clock. Of course they want to turn back the clock on abortion. They’ve spent 50 years trying to make that happen.”
“To all of you but particularly to the women of New York, this is our moment,” Hochul said Thursday.
Zeldin and Hochul will lock horns on Tuesday for their one debate before the people of New York go to the voting booths.
The race in New York remains tight, with Zeldin largely focusing his campaign on rising crime.
“I’ll tell you what: A lot of people are telling me that they’re keeping their head on a swivel more than ever before,” Zeldin said in Queens days after a subway rider was pushed onto the tracks. “People are walking these streets in a way like they’re in a combat zone.”
New York has double as many registered Democrats than Republicans and has not had a Republican governor since 2006. In 2012, Barack Obama won more than 80% of the overall vote in New York City.
