Report: DOJ watchdog probing U.S. Attorney Rachel Rollins
The Justice Department’s inspector general has commenced with an investigation of the top federal prosecutor in Massachusetts, which was prompted by U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins’ appearance at a political fundraiser featuring First Lady Jill Biden, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The inspector general’s office is focusing on Rollins’ attendance at the Democratic National Committee event in July along with her reported use of personal cellphone to conduct official business, according to two sources who have been briefed about the investigation.
By appearing at such events, Rollins may have violated the Hatch Act, which limits political activity by government workers.
A trip that Rollins took to California is also on the table for investigation as it was reportedly funded by an outside group, the sources told AP.
The sources said that as the investigation is still ongoing, they have no authority publicly discuss it and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Rollins’ spokesperson, Christina DiLorio-Sterling, said Rollins is “fully cooperating with the OIG investigation.”
This is the second known federal investigation into Rollins less than a year into her tenure.
The inspector general’s office largely investigates allegations of fraud, abuse or violation of other Justice Department policies. Removing Rollins would be left up to President Joe Biden.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK) said Rollins’ appearance was a “blatant violation” of the Hatch Act by someone who should “act as a nonpartisan law enforcement official rather than as a partisan politician.”
Rollins tweeted in July that she “had approval” to meet the first lady and left the event early to speak at two other community events.
