Texas Councilman found lying in front yard after car crash in alleged drunk driving incident

A San Antonio city councilman turned himself in this week after police found him lying in his front yard last Sunday night after an apparent hit-and-run incident from which he had fled.

Body cam footage captured by the San Antonio Police shows City Councilman Clayton Perry lying on the grass in his yard, feet away from his still-running Jeep, which the footage shows had crashed into the politician’s garage door.

When police approach Perry, he appears unable to stand as the officers notify him his car is still running. Perry goes on to tell the officers he “had a good time” earlier in the night, but did not specify where he had been.

While police did not test Perry’s blood alcohol level the night they found him in the yard, an arrest warrant was issued for him in connection with a hit-and-run that occurred two miles from Perry’s home.

When asked about the crash on the evening he was found, Perry told the officers he did not recall any car accident that night. When officers confirmed that his vehicle had been in a hit-and-run, Perry responded by repeatedly saying “No.”

Perry turned himself in at the courthouse in San Antonio on Thursday at approximately 4pm. He was arrested on charges of failure to stop and give information after a crash that resulted in damages to a vehicle over $200. 

There were allegedly several witnesses who saw the councilman’s Jeep crash into another car on Sunday evening, and watched him fail to stop before driving away from the scene.

If found guilty, Perry faces up to 180 days in jail and $2000 in fines.
