VA officials release ‘death note’ on Chesapeake Walmart gunman’s phone
Officials from the City of Chesapeake in Virginia, where a lone gunman murdered six people in a mass shooting on Tuesday night have released a disturbing document from the killer’s phone titled “Death Note” in which the gunman outlines his motive for the attack.
In a lengthy diatribe, the gunman, a night shift manager at the store, described what he believed to be mocking by other Walmart employees.
The note explains that while the suspect “did not plan” the attack, he was “led by the Satan [sic]” to carry out the shooting because his fellow employees had – he thought – betrayed him.
“The associates gave me evil twisted grins, mocked me and celebrated my down fall [sic] the last day. That’s why they suffer the same fate as me,” the note reads. It describes the gunman’s coworkers as “idiots with low intelligence and lack of wisdom,” and mentioned his phone being hacked recently, which he explains caused him great anguish.
The note, released on Twitter by the Chesapeake Police, is partially redacted to keep confidential some names of people mentioned. The suspect described himself as “actually one of the most loving people in the world if you would get to know” him.
The note ends, “I wish I could have saved everyone from myself. My God forgive me for what I’m going to do.” Police revealed on Friday that the weapon used in the killings, a 9mm handgun, was legally purchased by the gunman the morning of the shooting.
As of Thursday two of the injured victims were still in critical condition.
