What We Learned: Zelenskyy visits US, talks with Biden and gives speech to Congress
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday night thanked U.S. lawmakers and taxpayers for funding their military and providing other humanitarian and economic support.
“Your money is not charity,” Zelenskyy said during a speech addressed to Congress. “It is an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way.”
“Ukraine is alive and kicking. … The Russian tyranny has lost control over us,” Zelenskyy said. “It gives me great pleasure to share our first joint victory: We defeated Russia in the minds of the world.”
Zelenskyy also spoke with President Joe Biden earlier in the day where Biden promised Zelenskyy additional assistance, such as anti-aircraft Patriot missile batteries. But while Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude, he added that it isn’t enough.
“Russia could stop its aggression if it wanted to, but you could speed our victory – I know it,” Zelenskyy said.
“The occupiers have an advantage in artillery. They have much more planes and missiles than we have ever had,” he added. “We have artillery, yes, thank you. Is it enough? Honestly, not really.”
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California then handed Zelenskyy a flag that had been flown over the Capitol on Wednesday.
As Zelenskyy left the chamber holding the flag, a group of Ukrainians in the visitors section began chanting “God bless America.”
