Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi raises maximum pay for House staffers to $212K
Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has increased the maximum salary that lawmakers can pay House staff to $212,100.
This is approximately $38,000 more than the salary of Senators and Congressional representatives, who are paid $174,000 annually.
“As you know, our hard-working, patriotic congressional staffers are integral to the functioning of the House of Representatives,” Pelosi said in a letter addressed to House lawmakers.
She added, “To that end, we must do all we can to retain and recruit the best talent in our nation — and to build a congressional workforce that reflects the communities we are honored to serve.”
A similar directive was issued earlier this year raising the maximum pay staffers can make from $199,300 to $203,700.
Before the House passed a minimum wage, there was a big difference in salaries among House staffers, with some not even making enough to cover the cost of living in their location.
Pelosi will be leaving her role as Speaker in January when the new Republicans Congress goes into session.
