Rapper Cardi B responds to critics over her comments about high grocery prices
Rapper Cardi B responded this week to critics who lashed out at her after she tweeted her displeasure over the current state of grocery prices in the United States, pointing out that being “rich” does not mean she is unaware of soaring inflation.
Cardi B tweeted on January 3 about the cost of a head of lettuce in her neighborhood, marveling over how the item had gone up from about $2 a head to $7 a head in just months.
The tweet, and another that followed it that read “Naaaaaa grocery shopping prices are ridiculous right now … You might as well eat outside !!” garnered lots of comments and reactions, with some asserting Cardi B is a wealthy celebrity who cannot possibly understand how rising inflation and high grocery prices affect regular American families.
Responding to some of the critics, Cardi tweeted a video of herself captioned, “PSA!” The video showed Cardi telling her almost 27 million followers, “Let me tell you something when I be complaining about food prices and you motherf—ers be like ‘Ain’t you rich? Why are you complaining about lettuce? Why are you complaining about this?’” she says at the start of the video. “That just shows people that when you become successful when you got money, you’re going to go broke soon because y’all not budgeting.”
Cardi says she keeps a close eye on the expenses in her own household, and believes she should use her platform to spread awareness of issues plaguing Americans and try to usher lawmakers to address the problems accordingly.
She appeared on David Letterman’s Netflix series recently, telling him, “A lot of people relate to me and follow me because they want to see how I’m dressed, they want to see my lifestyle. I feel like I have a responsibility to also share to them like, ‘Hey, while you here and you’re checking my outfit and checking my music, check out what’s going on over here in this part of the world.’”
In the video she posted to Twitter, she adds, “I can only imagine what middle-class people or people in the hood is motherf—ing thinking so yes I’m going to say something, the f—? And I have a big platform so I do want anybody that is responsible of these f—ing prices to put that s— the f— down. They going to see my s—- they might put it down.”
