Classified documents found at home of former VP Mike Pence voluntarily turned over to feds
Attorneys for former US vice president Mike Pence voluntarily turned over classified documents found in Pence’s home in Indiana following similar documents being located at President Biden’s Delaware home.
According to CNN, who first reported the news, an attorney for Pence was called in “out of an abundance of caution” after both former president Trump and President Biden have both been found with classified documents at their personal residences and offices. During the search of the Pence home, the attorney discovered some documents from Pence’s time in the White House marked “classified.”
The attorney then notified the National Archives as well as relevant Congressional committees and members of Congress. The FBI bypassed regular procedures and went directly to the Pence residence to retrieve the documents and take them to Washington, DC to be processed in accordance with the Presidential Records Act.
Pence and his team have pledged to cooperate fully with any inquiries into the documents found at the former vice president’s home, and have promised full transparency. His spokesperson wrote in a letter to the Archives, “Vice President Pence was unaware of the existence of sensitive or classified documents at his personal residence. … Vice President Pence understands the high importance of protecting sensitive and classified information and stands ready and willing to cooperate fully with the National Archives and any appropriate inquiry.”
Biden and Trump are already under investigation to ensure no classified documents were mishandled, and Trump is also being investigated for possible obstruction of justice for his attempts to keep over 100 classified documents in his possession at Mar-a-Lago after he left the White House.
