Florida residents find nearly $2 million of cocaine packages close to shore
Authorities confirmed that residents in Florida Keys found close to $2 million worth of packaged cocaine close to the shore.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the cocaine was found on Big Pine Key on two separate occasions between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Deputies said the first discovery was 3 packages, each made up of 10 small bags of cocaine. This was found by a resident near the water on Long Beach Road.
Another package of cocaine was also found by a resident near Big Pine Key. This discovery involved 25 small bags of cocaine that weighed approximately 70 pounds (31.7 kilograms).
The cocaine was handed over to federal authorities to allow them to commence with their own investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The large package contained multiple smaller packages tightly packed with black tape,” spokesman Adam Linhardt said. “Its contents field-tested positive for cocaine.”
According to Newsweek, data from Customs and Border Protection shows that more than 60,000 pounds of illegal drugs were recovered across the United States in June.
