Video of Paul Pelosi attack released, showing suspect swinging a hammer at him
On Friday, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Stephen M. Murphy released both video and audio footage of Paul Pelosi’s hammer attack.
Judge Murphy stated that there was no reason to keep the footage from the public any longer, noting that prosecutors played it in open court.
The footage shows the policy arriving at the Pelosi home and then knocking on the front door, which was opened a few seconds later. Police encountered a scene with both Pelosi, and his alleged attacker David DePape were holding onto a hammer.
The police engage with both men, however their tone changes when they see the hammer. They order DePape to drop it.
“Um, nope,” DePape responds, pulling the hammer away from them and then attempting to hit Pelosi with it.
Police rush into the home and can be heard calling for backup as they handcuff DePape. Pelosi remained on the floor for DePape’s arrest.
DePape broke into the house at approximately 2am, looking for Nancy Pelosi and demanded to know where she was. Pelosi was able to call 911.
“Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott in October. “The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it.”
Authorities confirmed that DePape’s intentions were to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and that he reportedly told officers he wanted to “break her kneecaps.” Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack.
“I have not heard the 911 call. I have not heard the confession. I have not seen the break-in and I have absolutely no intention of seeing the deadly assault on my husband’s life,” she told reporters after the video was released.
Pelosi, 82, underwent surgery following the attack. Pelosi suffered a fractured skull along with injuries to his arms.
DePape has pleaded not guilty to six charges including attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official and their family.
Court records show that authorities “recovered zip ties in Pelosi’s bedroom and in the hallway near the front door of the Pelosi residence” and found “a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal” in his backpack.
