U.S. general predicts war with China by 2025
According to an blunt memo by a top U.S. general, the United States and China are only 2 years away from being at war. There have been several predictions of conflict between the 2 countries, most of them due to the direct of Taiwan.
Gen. Michael A. Minihan, who is head of Air Mobility Command, issued the memo. Minihan
“I hope I am wrong,” Minihan wrote. “My gut tells me we will fight in 2025. Xi secured his third term and set his war council in October 2022. Taiwan’s presidential elections are in 2024 and will offer Xi a reason. United States’ presidential elections are in 2024 and will offer Xi a distracted America. Xi’s team, reason, and opportunity are all aligned for 2025.”
Minihan also instructed his troops to “consider their personal affairs.”
President Xi spoke at a recent meeting with several top party officials where he said that “peaceful reunification” remains his party’s stance, however he did not rule out using force if China has to “Taiwan independence forces” and “foreign interference.”
Beijing’s mindset is that the blame for diplomatic and military tensions rests solely at the door of The United States. An official white paper about China’s Taiwan strategy, released after Nancy Pelosi, who was Speaker of the House at the time, became the highest-ranking U.S. politician to visit the island democracy since 1997, accused Washington of “using Taiwan to contain China.”
“From Beijing’s perspective, military deterrence is the only reliable way to prevent Taiwan [from] moving toward independence,” said Zhu Feng, who is the executive dean of the Institute for International Studies at Nanjing University.
Zhu went onto say that “both sides continue to frame the issue in their own way such that lingering tensions force both sides to sleepwalk into a military conflict.” In that sense, he said, Minihan’s memo is a timely warning to both sides that “they need to stop overplaying the Taiwan issue.”
