MSU shooter declared dead
Authorities have confirmed that the 43-year-old gunman who killed 3 and wounded 5 more at Michigan State University has died following a self-inflicted gunshot.
Deputy Chief Chris Rozman released a statement shortly after midnight confirming that the shooter was found deceased just off MSU’s campus.
“This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students, and our surrounding community,” Rozman said.
Those who were wounded, some of whom are critical, are being treated at Sparrow Hospital.
The shooting started inside Berkley Hall at 8.18pm. Berkley Hall is home to MSU’s Department of Sociology on the northern side of the campus.
The university issued a shelter-in-place order at 8:31 p.m. telling students to stay inside and secure their location.
“Run, Hide, Fight,” MSU said in the alert. “Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option.”
After firing several shots inside Berkey Hall, the suspect then walked over to MSU Union and fired further shots, according to police.
MSU canceled classes for the next two days and pleaded with students not to attend campus on Tuesday.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from the FBI, ATF, Michigan State Police, and other agencies assisted local police officers and campus security in securing the campus. The FAA also imposed temporary flight restrictions over MSU’s campus.
Authorities are still working to confirm the identity of the shooter and whether he has any ties with the university.
