Weinstein sentenced to 16 years in prison
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16-years in prison in a Los Angeles Court for rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by a foreign object.
Weinstein asked the judge for leniency ahead of his sentencing stating that the case was flawed.
“Please don’t sentence me to life in prison, I don’t deserve it” Weinstein said.
“There are too many loopholes. Too many things wrong with this case.”
“This is a set-up. This is not the way to act in this situation.”
He concluded by saying “I beg your mercy.”
Weinstein went onto question the reliability of one of his accusers.
“This is a made-up story. Jane Doe 1 is an actress. She can turn the tears on.”
Weinstein’s legal team also hit out at sentence due to his “advanced age and deteriorating health”.
A spokesperson for Weinstein said after the verdict: “It’s a cruel sentence, given his age, his health and the conditions of his conviction in Los Angeles, when the sole charge was from a person who lied, with the judge and prosecutor well aware of it and permitting it, about critical elements of her own claim.
“It’s not justice, but a pile on for a man many people just decided should be cast off and discarded regardless of facts.”
Weinstein will start serving this sentence once he has completed his 23-year sentence for sexual assault in New York.
A lawyer for one of Weinstein’s victims said that he will be going to prison “where he belongs”.
