Prime Minister of the UK proposes legislation that would stop migrant boats
Rishi Sunak announced that he is “up for the fight” for any opposition to his legislation which will stop small boats carrying migrants arriving in the UK.
Sunak said he was confident he would prevail in any legal battles to ensure that he could implement his legislation which he said was “tough, but necessary and fair.”
Sunak also took to Twitter to tout his new legislation.
“Today we are introducing new laws that mean if you come to the UK illegally you will be banned from ever re-entering our country. This is how we will break the business model of the people smugglers; this is how we will take back control of our borders.”
“The Illegal Migration Bill ensures that if you come to the UK illegally you can’t stay. People must know that coming here illegally will result in their detention and swift removal – once they do, they will not come, and the boats will stop.”
UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman also announced the bill during a debate in parliament.
The opposition party Labour said the new legislation was simply “Groundhog Day” and a “con.”
The UN’s refugee agency, the UNHCR, said that Sunak’s proposed legislation basically amounted to an “asylum ban”.
Sunak conceded that the migrant boat issue was a “complicated” problem and while he had no “silver bullet” to fix it, he said he would not be proposing this legislation if he didn’t believe it would work.
