Why President Trump Is Right About Greenland and How the United States Can Stop Russian Supremacy in the Arctic
The Arctic is no longer a frozen backwater. It is the emerging front line of great-power competition, where geography, resources, nuclear strategy, hypersonic strike, undersea warfare, and dual-use infrastructure converge. Russia has spent more than a decade militarizing its northern approaches while thinning selected defenses to sustain the Ukraine war. China has layered dual-use research stations across the High North. The United States, until recently, treated the region as an afterthought. President Trump’s insistence that Greenland must be brought more firmly under American strategic control is not real-estate whimsy. It is cold-eyed, strategic realism about the shortest polar routes, early-warning sensors, undersea approaches, and the ability to deny adversaries sanctuary in the far north.
Most recent satellite imagery reveals the dual track of Russian policy. Advanced air-defense systems have disappeared from longstanding Arctic positions near Rogachevo on Novaya Zemlya and around Severodvinsk, while new barracks, ammunition depots, and headquarters rise near the Finnish and Norwegian borders. At Pechenga and other frontier sites, infrastructure expansion could eventually support far larger forces once Moscow regenerates manpower. Russia is accepting tactical vulnerability today to preserve strategic military options tomorrow.
Simultaneously, the Northern Fleet continues its modernization. New Yasen-M class nuclear attack submarines, including the keel-laid Murmansk, combine stealth, long-range strike, and operations in the Barents Sea and beyond. These boats integrate the 3M22 Zircon (Tsirkon) hypersonic cruise missile.
The Zircon Threat
The 3M22 Zircon is a scramjet-powered hypersonic cruise missile designed for anti-ship and land-attack roles. Reported characteristics include:
- Maximum speed approaching Mach 9 (roughly 6,900–11,000 km/h depending on trajectory).
- Claimed range up to 1,000 km (Western estimates often place low-altitude range lower, around 400–750 km).
- Flight altitudes up to approximately 28 km in the cruise phase, with possible sea-skimming terminal flight.
- Estimated conventional warhead of 300–400 kg, with nuclear capability.
- Length about 9 meters, diameter around 60 cm.
- Guidance combining inertial navigation with active/passive radar seekers; Russian claims emphasize a plasma sheath that complicates radar detection.
Launched from Arctic waters, Zircon compresses warning times for northern Europe and complicates NATO reinforcement across the North Atlantic. Its speed, maneuverability, and nuclear option make it central to Russia’s Arctic bastion strategy.
Dual-Use Research Stations
China’s Yellow River Station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (opened 2004) exemplifies the dual-use problem. Linked to entities in China’s military-electronics complex, it has conducted research with potential applications in missile guidance, ionospheric studies, and satellite tracking relevant to BeiDou positioning and PLA targeting. U.S. congressional scrutiny has flagged intelligence-collection risks and acoustic/oceanographic data useful for submarine operations.
Russia maintains an extensive network of Arctic research and dual-use facilities alongside military bases on the Kola Peninsula, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, and elsewhere. Joint Russian-Chinese scientific activity, icebreaker cooperation, and oceanographic surveys have expanded since 2022. These platforms collect bathymetric, acoustic, and atmospheric data that directly support submarine quieting, undersea warfare, and long-range missile accuracy. Under both regimes’ military-civil fusion doctrines, the line between pure science and military preparation has largely disappeared.
Russian Bomber Sabre-Rattling
Long-range aviation remains a preferred coercive tool. In June 2026, two Tu-160 strategic bombers conducted a roughly 16-hour patrol over the Barents and Norwegian Seas, escorted by MiG-31 fighters and supported by aerial refueling. Norwegian F-35s intercepted and shadowed the flight. Similar Tu-95MS and Tu-160 sorties near NATO airspace have become routine. These missions demonstrate nuclear-capable reach, test response times, and assert presence in the High North while remaining deniable as “scheduled” activity.
Greenland sits astride the critical polar approaches between North America and Eurasia. Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule) provides ballistic-missile early warning, space surveillance, and domain awareness that no other location fully replaces. Denmark lacks the capacity to defend the island against determined peer adversaries. Russia’s growing undersea and hypersonic presence, combined with Chinese interest in scientific stations, rare-earth access, and polar routes, turns Greenland into a strategic keystone. Securing it restores interior lines of communication and forward defense in an era of peer competition.
President Trump’s position—that the United States cannot leave this keystone dependent on Danish political will or limited resources—aligns with classic strategic logic. Control or decisive influence over Greenland strengthens missile defense, undersea surveillance, air and naval basing, and the ability to contest the northern approaches. Peace through strength, not paper guarantees, deterred the Soviet Union. The same principle applies to Neo-Soviet Russia today.
The Bold Five-Point Arctic Eagle Initiative
This hawkish American National Reaganite plan prioritizes American initiative, technological edge, and denial of adversary sanctuary.
1. Secure decisive American strategic control of Greenland and deploy high-powered optics and directed-energy defenses.
Negotiate expanded basing rights, dual-use infrastructure, resource partnerships, and arrangements that place critical defense nodes under unambiguous U.S. operational authority. Expand Pituffik and develop additional air, naval, and sensor facilities. Field advanced electro-optical and infrared surveillance networks across Greenland and Alaska. Deploy naval and land-based high-energy laser systems (building on HELIOS-class 60 kW and higher-power solid-state lasers already in Navy testing and maturation) for counter-drone, counter-missile, and optical-dazzling roles. These systems offer near-unlimited magazines limited only by power and cooling—ideal for the logistics-constrained Arctic. Integrate them with nuclear-capable long-range strike and ballistic-missile defense layers so that any adversary calculating a limited nuclear or EMP strike faces a resilient, multi-domain response.
2. Reinforce the GIUK Gap and the broader Arctic undersea barrier.
Restore and modernize the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap surveillance architecture with new seabed sensors, unmanned underwater vehicles, fixed hydrophone arrays, and persistent manned/unmanned anti-submarine warfare assets. Treat the Gap not as a passive barrier but as a forward engagement zone. Deny Russian Yasen-M and Borei-class submarines free transit into the North Atlantic while pressuring their Arctic bastions. Pair this with expanded nuclear attack submarine presence and continuous tracking of Zircon-capable platforms. Adopt an updated “no bastion for the Bear” posture: continuous pressure on Russian Northern Fleet operating areas rather than passive defense.
The Army and Marine Corps must field forces trained to fight in and secure the Arctic
3. Surge Army and Marine Corps Arctic-capable forces.
Establish permanent or rotational heavy and light formations trained and equipped for extreme cold-weather operations. Expand U.S. Army Alaska and Marine Corps units with ice-capable logistics, mobile air-defense systems (including directed-energy options), and pre-positioned stocks in Greenland and in Alaska. Create a high-readiness Arctic Eagle Combined Arms Task Force able to seize and hold key terrain, protect sensor nodes, and contest Russian ground-force expansion near Finland and Norway once Moscow regenerates manpower after Ukraine. Pre-position fuel, munitions, and logistics at Greenland and Alaska nodes. Conduct large-scale, offensive-oriented exercises that signal the ability to contest Russian bases and sea lanes on short notice.
4. Rebuild nuclear and conventional long-range strike dominance in the High North.
Modernize and visibly exercise nuclear-capable bomber and submarine forces oriented on Arctic approaches. Ensure dual-capable aircraft and sea-based nuclear options can hold Russian Arctic bases, airfields, and command nodes at risk. Combine this with conventional hypersonic and long-range precision strike to create a seamless escalation ladder that deters both limited aggression and nuclear coercion. Critical command, control, and early-warning systems on Greenland and Alaska must be hardened against high-altitude nuclear effects and EMP—core requirements of serious strategic preparedness.
The economic part of securing the Arctic
5. Couple military strength with economic leverage—including tariffs—and alliance pressure to isolate Russian-Chinese Arctic ambitions.
Use targeted tariffs, sanctions, export controls, investment screening, and preferential partnerships with Greenland and Nordic allies to limit dual-use research and commercial inroads. Protective tariffs on strategic materials, rare-earths, and dual-use technologies can reduce dependence on adversarial supply chains while strengthening domestic and allied industrial capacity—the same principle that once built American manufacturing power. Demand transparent inspection regimes for foreign research stations. Require NATO allies with Arctic exposure to meet real capability targets rather than rhetorical ones. Maintain the nuclear deterrent as the ultimate backstop while making clear that further militarization of the northern approaches will be met with superior American power across every domain.
A good reason to make the Arctic one of our oceans
This is not militarism for its own sake. It is the recognition that the Arctic’s opening sea lanes, resources, and strategic geography will be shaped by whoever arrives with the will and the means. Russia is building for the day after Ukraine. China is embedding dual-use infrastructure under scientific cover. Bomber flights, hypersonic submarines, and expanding frontier bases are the visible tip of a long-term campaign. The United States still holds the decisive advantages in technology, alliances, nuclear forces, and geography—if it chooses to use them.
President Trump’s focus on Greenland is a correct diagnosis. The Arctic Eagle Sphere initiative is the prescription: directed-energy overmatch, reinforced undersea barriers, expanded ground forces, nuclear resilience, economic tools including tariffs, and the refusal to cede the High North to authoritarian powers that respect only hard power. The window remains open. It will not stay open indefinitely.
As President Andrew Jackson observed regarding the common defense of American sovereignty:
Without union, our independence and liberty would never have been achieved; without union, they can never be maintained… The common defense was one of the greatest objects for which the Union was formed, and the power of providing for it must be complete and unrestricted in the national sovereign.
President James Monroe declared in 1823 the foundational principle that still guides hemispheric security:
The American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.
And further:
We should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety.
The Federalist Papers remind us of the deeper logic of national power. Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist No. 23:
The authorities essential to the common defense are these: to raise armies; to build equip fleets; to prescribe rules for the government of both; to direct their operations; to provide for their support. These powers ought to exist without limitation, because it is impossible to foresee or define the extent and variety of national exigencies, or the correspondent extent and variety of the means which may be necessary to satisfy them.
In Federalist No. 41, James Madison observed that
security against foreign danger is one of the primitive objects of civil society,…
and that the means of providing for it
must be effectually trusted to the federal councils.
These are not relics. They are the permanent requirements of a free republic that intends to remain free and fully national sovereign.
