Democrat hopeful Nick Kristof does not qualify to run for Oregon Governor, Secretary of State says
Democrat Nick Kristof does not meet Oregon’s residency requirement to qualify to run for state governor, Secretary of State Shemia Fagan said.
Despite growing up in, owning property in, and returning to the state while working as a New York Times columnist in New York, he is unable to run for governor of Oregon.
According to Oregon Live, Election officials focused on Kristof’s record of voting in New York as recently as the 2020 general election. Additionally, Kristof kept a New York driver’s license through December 2020 and continued paying New York income taxes past the November 2019 deadline for a governor run in Oregon.
Elections director Deborah Scroggin and compliance specialist Lydia Plukchi wrote to Kristof, “When determining residency for elections, the place where a person votes is particularly powerful because voting is the center of engaged citizenship. The fact that you voted in New York strongly indicates that you viewed it as the place where you intended to permanently return when you were away.”
Scroggins and Plutchi pointed out that he has only registered to vote in Oregon on December 28, 2020. However, he paid income taxes to Oregon in 2019 and 2020.
Kristof has made it clear that he plans on appealing the secretary of state’s decision to a circuit court. “We’re going to continue campaigning for governor and we’re going to win that, too,” Kristof said.

They are following the real rules – WOW. Just image if people and the Courts had followed the US Constitution when the McCain/Palin, Obama/Biden and Biden/Harris teams had been running. Mr McCain, Mr Obama, and Mrs Harris fail all Citizenship requirements. Mr McCain and Mr Obama citizenship type is “native born Citizen” and Mrs Harris, based upon her birth conditions is not even a US citizen. At best she may be a naturalized Citizen. And since the Electoral College is selecting the President and Vice-President as a team both mean members must meet the requirements as specified by Article 2 Section 1 Paragraph 5 and Amendment 12 of the US Constitution.
