Idaho lawmakers to consider bill to keep source of lethal injections secret
On Monday, Idaho state lawmakers introduced a bill that would hide the source of lethal injection drugs.
State Representative Greg Chaney (R) said Monday that these groups have tried to “leverage woke, cancel culture to shame providers of lethal injection drugs away from providing those drugs for executions for states. They’ve been successful enough around the country that the word that [pharmacies] are giving to our department of corrections is ‘Don’t even call us if you cannot provide us with anonymity.’”
There has been a shortage in the United States for these drugs since 2011, when Europe banned their export. Chaney took to Twitter to say, “I refuse to let woke cancel culture keep our state from enforcing our laws & ensuring public safety – especially when it comes to convicted murderers.”
The State Affairs committee has agreed to introduce the bill on a voice vote (Idaho Press). While what Chaney says may ring true, the origin of lethal injections are often called into question, as ineffective drugs can lead to botched executions. This is a direct violation of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.
