Group of bipartisan senators travel to Poland and Germany to meet with NATO, military officials
A group of US senators representing both Republicans and Democrats traveled to Europe this weekend to meet with NATO and military officials to discuss the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The group, led by Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), had several meetings on their agenda, including meeting Gen. John Shalikashvili Mission Command Center in Wiesbaden, Germany, U.S. ambassador to Germany Amy Guttman at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin and German State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. Additionally, the group visited refugee sites and met with nonprofits on the ground in Poland.
In a joint statement from the 10 senators, Ernst wrote, “This strong, bipartisan delegation proves the Senate stands united in its support for Ukraine. During our time in Poland and Germany, we will have the opportunity to gain greater insight on the U.S. and NATO response through engagements with top military leaders.”
“We will return with better insight on how Congress can and should continue to support the Ukrainian people and our NATO allies, and see firsthand the heartbreaking humanitarian impact of Putin’s war of aggression.”
The trip marks the second time in a week US Senators have visited Poland amid the invasion of Ukraine. Days ago, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Rob Portman (R-OH) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CN) visited to tour refugee sites and meet with Polish officials.
