Ukraine refuses to give-in to Russian ultimatum to surrender Mariupol
On Monday, Ukraine’s government flatly rejected an ultimatum from Moscow to surrender Mariupol, and vowed to continue defending major Ukrainian cities from Russian attacks.
Russia attempted to issue an ultimatum on Monday, telling Mariupol residents to put down their arms and surrender in exchange for safe passage out of the area. Residents were given until 5am on Monday to respond to the ultimatum, but the Ukrainian government spoke out on Monday, telling the Kremlin there is no chance of surrender.
“There can be no talk of any surrender, laying down of arms,” saidnUkrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk to Ukrainian news outlet Pravda. “We have already informed the Russian side about this.”
The Mayor of Mariupol, Piotr Andryushchenko, also scoffed at Russia’s offer via Facebook, saying he did not need until morning to respond, and cursing at the Russian forces attempting to take over his city.
The European Union responded to the Russian ultimatum saying Moscow is using refugees as a tool, and it is prepared to impose more sanctions on Russia if needed.
