US buys 300,000 more monkeypox vaccine doses
The U.S. government said Friday it has purchased an additional 300,000 monkeypox vaccines produced by Bavarian Nordic, adding to its current stock of around 72,000 doses, AP reports.
As of Friday, the U.S. had identified 45 cases in 15 states and the District of Columbia. More than 1,300 cases have been found in about 30 other countries outside the areas of Africa where the virus is endemic. Officials say the risk to the American public is low, but they are taking steps to assure people that medical measures are in place to deal with the growing problem.
The new purchase comes days after the WHO said it does not recommend mass vaccination against monkeypox.
A two-dose vaccine, Jynneos, is approved for monkeypox in the U.S. The U.S. government has 72,000 Jynneos doses, and will get 300,000 more doses from its manufacturer, Bavarian Nordic, over the next several weeks, said Dawn O’Connell, who oversees the government’s stockpile of emergency vaccines and treatments.
On Friday, the government announced it had ordered 500,000 more Jynneos doses from Bavarian Nordic to be delivered late this year. The company also is holding other doses owned by the U.S. government, she said.
Last month, cases began emerging in Europe and the United States. Many — but not all — of those who contracted the virus had traveled internationally. While most cases are spread through men who have sex with other men, anyone can get it. The CDC says every case that they’ve looked at have involved very close contact.
Officials have alerted doctors to watch for monkeypox cases and offered vaccinations to people in contact with those who were infected. As of now, over 1,400 vaccine courses and over 110 treatment courses have been sent to affected state and local jurisdictions.
