New York Times Poll: Half of Republican voters ready to leave Trump behind
A recent poll conducted by New York Times and Sienna College has shown that just over half of Republican voters want to leave him in the past and would prefer to have another candidate.
49% of those polled said they would vote for Trump with DeSantis coming in second with 25%. DeSantis was the only other candidate aside from Trump to receive a double-digit score. Other candidates included in the poll were former Vice President Mike Pence, Ted Cruz and Nikki Haley.
Ted Cruz polled at 7%, whilst Mike Pence and Nikki Haley both polled at 6%. 5% of voters either refused to vote or were unsure, whilst 2% said they would vote for Mike Pompeo.
Approximately 66% of those polled who possessed either a college degree or were under the age of 35 said they would not vote for Trump.
Elon Musk took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the matter, saying: “I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset. Dems should also call off the attack – don’t make it so that Trump’s only way to survive is to regain the Presidency.” He added in another tweet that “the legal maximum age for start of Presidential term should be 69.”
Musk’s Tweet comes on the back of unfavourable comments made by Trump about Musk when he referred to him as “just another bullsh*t artist.” This was in relation to Musk’s past endorsements of Trump’s candidates and his decision to pull out of buying Twitter.
“They are Fake News,” Trump said in a statement responding to the poll. “The New York Times will continue to decline because people no longer believe their reporting is even close to being true. Fake polls, phony stories, and made-up quotes, they are a disgrace to journalism and have set it back many many years. THE NEW YORK TIMES IS TRULY THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”
This poll comes on the back of a recent poll from the same authors stating that two-thirds of Democrats don’t want Joe Biden to run in 2024, citing his age and job performance as the main reasons.
