Banana Boat issues recall of sunscreen spray after finding traces of cancer causing chemicals
After a recent internal review on Friday, Edgewell Personal Care Company recalled 3 batches of Banana Boat sunscreen. It was a voluntary recall which was conducted due to trace levels of benzene being found in their sunscreen.
The recalled product was Banana Boat hair and scalp SPF30. This product is sold both in retail outlets and online. Consumers can tell if their product has is part of the recall list by checking the information at the base of the spray can.
The following products have been recalled and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised anyone who has one of these products to cease using it immediately; Lot Code: 20016AF; Expiration Date: December 2022, Lot Code: 20084BF; Expiration Date: February 2023 and Lot Code: 21139AF; Expiration Date: April 2024.
The FDA has classified Benzene as a human carcinogen. Exposure to Benzene could cause cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow.
“While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the company said in a statement. Banana Boat confirmed that any consumers who bought any of the recalled products will be entitled to a full refund.
The FDA has requested that any consumers who have side affects as a result of any of the recalled products should either make a report online or contact them in writing.
Edgewell confirmed that as of August 1st, it “has not received any adverse events related to this recall” and other Banana Boat products remain safe to use.
“We know that you love our products, and we are conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution,” Banana Boat said. “Importantly, no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.”
