Senators Mitch McConnell and Kyrsten Sinema to speak at lecture on bipartisanship
Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) will join Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell at the University of Louisville on Monday to deliver a speech on bipartisanship.
According to the Courier Journal, the lecture is titled “The Future of Political Discourse and the Importance of Bipartisanship.”
Sinema, along with Joe Manchin have often locked horns with their Democrat colleagues as both their votes have usually been crucial to Democrat bills being passed.
One such issue that both Sinema and Manchin have refused to budge on is getting rid of the filibuster, which is a 60-vote threshold the Senate must meet to advance most bills.
Sinema has stood with Democrats on issues such as the Inflation Reduction Act, which was aimed mostly at climate change and reducing prescription drug expenses for Medicare patients.
McConnell said last year that he admired the duo’s “courage in defending the Senate as an institution.”
The event will start at 10am and will be hosted by the McConnell Center, which McConnell started over 30 years along with university officials. The event will not be open to the general public, but people can live stream the lecture on YouTube.
The McConnell Center gives scholarships to Kentucky students and hosts events such Monday’s that have featured government officials from both sides of the political aisle.
