Coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6, 2023
Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6, 2023.
The ceremony will be carried out at Westminster Abbey in London, where it has been held for the last 900 years, and will be overseen by Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
The King will be crowned alongside his wife, Camila Parker Bowles, who will be crowned as the Queen’s consort.
An insider source has suggested the ceremony will last one hour, which is shorter than the ceremonies for Queen Elizabeth II and King George VI.
Queen Elizabeth II had her coronation on June 2, 1953. The event lasted 3 hours and was attended by 8,000 dignitaries.
Thousands also took to the street as the Queen rode in the gold state coach, which was also used for the coronation of George VI.
Charles III was sworn in as King almost immediately after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, however this ceremony will mark the formal investiture of his regal power.
No guest list has been drawn up yet, and it is not known whether Prince Harry or Meghan Markle will be invited. The ceremony does fall on the birthday of their son Archie.
King Charles will be 74 when the ceremony takes place making him the oldest person to be crowned as King or Queen in British history.
