VP Harris visits Detroit to campaign for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Vice President Kamala Harris appeared in good spirits as she attended a fundraising event in Detroit on Saturday to lend her support to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The event was held at a facility that trains young people who want to work in construction.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, remains the favourite reelection despite the fact that her gubernational race with Republican Tudor Dixon appears to tighten.

According to Real Clear Politics, in the most recent poll between the two candidates, Gretchen Whitmer had 48.7% of the voting share, while Tudor Dixon had 43%, giving the current Governor a 5.7% lead.

Harris and Whitmer appeared as allies, however some see them as possible future rivals that could face off in a presidential primary in 2024 or 2028. A 2024 run for the White House would largely depend on whether President Biden decides to seek another term.

Harris greeted Whitmer with a hug. Harris opened her speech by lavishing praise on Whitner, whom she called an “extraordinary leader” who is “always about real talk” had followed through on her campaign promise to “fix the damn roads.”

Harris and Whitmer “have played well and supported each other,” said John Sellek, who is a Lansin based Republican consultant who was in charge of Mitt Romney’s (R-UT) 2012 presidential campaign in the state. “But I think Republicans feel it’s safe to say that if Biden didn’t run for reelection, or even if Biden serves a second term, that friendship will become secondary to pursuing the presidency.”

Mark Brewer, who was chairman of the state Democratic Party from 1995 to 2013, spoke about the importance of winning Michigan.

“I don’t think Michigan’s going to stop being a swing state in the future. I think any Democrat who wants to become president is going to have to carry Michigan. What better way to carry Michigan than to have a candidate from Michigan?”

Whitmer recently turned down an interview with NBC to discuss whether Joe Biden should run again in 2024. She also said that her being linked to the role of President was “flattering.”

Whitmer did promise that she would serve out her second term if re-elected as governor and told The Detroit News on Tuesday, that rumors of her running for President in the near future are “baloney.”
