Soccer star charged with attempted rape, denied bail
Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, “repeatedly engaging” controlling and coercive behavior and assault. All charges relate to the same female complainant, Prosecutor Rebecca Macaulay-Addison confirmed.
Macauley-Addison went on to say that Greenwood obsessively monitored the complainant’s social media accounts and “making threats and derogatory comments towards her, amounting to a serious effect upon her.”
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United when the allegations came to light.
Greenwood had been on bail since January; however, he was arrested on Saturday for reportedly breaching his bail conditions.
Greenwood arrived at court in a police van after spending 2 nights in a police cell. Green was wearing a grey hoodie, white T-shirt and grey jogging bottoms. He spoke only to confirm his full name, date of birth and address.
Greenwood’s lawyer David Toal requested that his client be released on bail, however the judge denied Greenwood bail and with his next appearance in court set for 21 November, which means he will spend just over a month in custody.
Janet Potter, who is a deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS Northwest, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings.”
Manchester United also issued a statement after Greenwood was formally charged.
“Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service. He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”
