House Select Committee formally subpoenas Donald Trump in Jan. 6 investigation
The House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol Building formally issued a subpoena to former president Donald Trump this week, requesting his testimony under oath and records related to the probe.
The subpoena, which was first voted upon at the end of the Committee hearing earlier this month, was officially issued on Friday, marking an historic move in which the House has demanded an under oath testimony in a probe that may incriminate a former United States president.
In a statement released on Friday, the January 6 Committee described its letter to Trump, which “underscored his central role in a deliberate, orchestrated effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and block the transfer of presidential power, a matter central to the committee’s investigation as it reviews the facts and considers recommendations to prevent a recurrence of the violence of January 6th.”
The Trump legal team responded to the subpoena in a strongly-worded statement on Friday, accusing the Committee of “flouting norms and appropriate and customary process” and saying they will “review and analyze” the subpoena and respond accordingly.
