No winner in Monday Powerball sends prize total to a whopping $1.2 billion

Monday’s $1 billion Powerball drawing did not have a winning match, causing Wednesday’s jackpot shooting up to an impressive $1.2 billion.

While Monday’s drawing saw millions of entries, none matched the Halloween Powerball drawing, meaning the next draw, this week on Wednesday, will offer players a chance at $1.2 billion if they win and select annuity payments, or approximately $596 million in a cash payout.

The high Powerball prize will make Wednesday’s drawing the fourth largest jackpot in United States lottery history. The largest jackpot was $1.586 billion in 2016, which was split between three winners.

According to the Powerball website, the largest unclaimed lottery winnings were in Georgia in 2011, for a total of $77 billion, and in 2013 in Florida for 50 million. The most recent unclaimed winning ticket was in August this year, in Pennsylvania, where an unclaimed ticket is worth $122 million.

Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah are the only five US states that do not participate in the Powerball lottery. All other states plus Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are part of the nationwide lotto.

The five states that do not participate also do not have their own state lotteries. Residents of those states can, however, travel to other states and purchase tickets there.

Wednesday’s Powerball drawing will take place at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
