Paul Pelosi attacker pleads not guilty to all charges
David DePape, who is the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s house and assaulting her husband Paul with a hammer, has pleaded not guilty to all charges in his first court hearing.
DePape is currently facing charges of the following: Attempted homicide, first-degree burglary, violent felony enhancement, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with serious bodily injury, elder abuse, inflict great bodily injury on elderly, dissuading a victim, threatening public official or family member, and damaging or preventing a communication for an emergency call.
DePape was present in court, however he entered his not guilty plea through his attorney, Adam Lipson. DePape was dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit and his right arm was in a sling.
DePape alleged that this was injured when he was in custody. DePape only spoke to confirm the pronunciation of his surname, “dee-pa.”
DePape hasn’t entered a verdict in federal court. His attempted kidnapping charge would carry a maximum sentence of 20 years, should he be found guilty.
Police say DePape broke into the politician’s home and reportedly shouted “Where’s Nancy?” Nancy Pelosi was not home at the time.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins confirmed to CNN on Tuesday that authorities believe DePape also had “targets” besides Pelosi. Jenkins added that the case is still “very fresh” and she wouldn’t confirm any further targets of DePape.
The DA acknowledged that DePape has been “cooperative” with police and “submitted to a lengthy interview” before obtaining representation through counsel.
DePape’s attorney, Adam Lipson, said that “there’s been a lot of speculation, a lot of rumor, simply based on the nature of this case.”
“So I’m not going to add to all the speculation by talking about the facts of this case right now,” he said, adding: “What I will say is that there’s been a lot of speculation regarding Mr. DePape’s vulnerability to misinformation and that’s certainly something we are going to look into, that we are going to delve into, as his defense team, but again it would be premature to talk about that at this time.”
Kelvin Wu, who is a spokesman for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that DePape has already been discharged from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and is now in custody at the San Francisco sheriff’s office.
