MD Republican Gov. Hogan: ‘My side of the party had a really good night. Trump’s side did not’
Governor Robert Hogan (R-MD) touted several midterm victories achieved by Republican candidates who have taken an anti-Trump stance.
“I’ve been talking about a bigger tent,” Hogan told CBS’s Robert Costa during an interview. “And we need that. I think there is a battle for which direction the Republican Party will go. My side of the party had a really good night. Trump’s side did not.”
Democrat Wes Moore was running against Trump-backed candidate Dan Cox in the state’s gubernatorial race to succeed Hogan as Maryland’s Governor. Hogan himself refused to endorse Cox and Moore ended up defeating Cox.
“I don’t know if it was a complete repudiation of Trump and Trump politics, but it was certainly a much better night for Republicans running as commonsense conservatives,” Hogan said. “Those Republicans won almost everywhere.”
Many of Trump endorsed candidates did win their race, however Hogan argued that these were in non-competitive states.
Hogan said that while many Republican candidates have operated under Trump’s MAGA movement, he “felt like I was on a lifeboat all by myself with everybody on the Trump Titanic.”
“We need a bigger boat,” Hogan emphasized, adding that the midterm results make entice him to make him seek a presidential run in 2024.
Trump himself acknowledged that the midterm results did not meet expectation, saying on Truth Social: “While in certain ways yesterday’s election was somewhat disappointing, from my personal standpoint it was a very big victory – 219 WINS and 16 Losses in the General – Who has ever done better than that?”
