Former United States president George W. Bush announced this week he will be holding a speaking event alongside Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky in the coming days to highlight the fight for freedom around the world.

According to the press release from the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the two leaders will discuss “Ukraine’s commitment to democracy” amid the ongoing assault by Russian President Vladimir Putin that began in February. The release also says Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen will also join the discussion to provide virtual commentary.

“Fearless supporters of freedom around the world remain undeterred, even in the face of threats, such as those in Ukraine following Vladimir Putin’s unjustified decision to invade that country,” said Executive Director of the Bush Institute, David J. Kramer.

Kramer added, “We are honored to have courageous leaders like President Zelenskyy and President Tsai participate in our event in support of democracy and human rights. We stand with the people of both Ukraine and Taiwan as they defend their right to live freely.”

The event comes amid a public face-off between prominent Republicans, some of whom believe the United States should curb its war aid to Ukraine, and others who say it is vital to support Ukraine in its fight against the Kremlin.

After Tuesday’s midterm elections, with Republicans poised to take control of the House of Representatives, the Biden White House may have a much steeper battle ahead of it when it comes to foreign aid packages moving forward.
