Virginia’s Republican Lt. Governor says it’s time for GOP to ‘move on’ from Trump
The Republican Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Winsome Sears, appeared on Fox News this week following the midterm elections, telling viewers it is time for the GOP to step away from Trump and the MAGA movement.
Talking to Neil Cavuto on Thursday, Sears, the first black female to be elected to statewide office in Virginia, said she could not support former president Trump, and believes the party would do well to move away from the idea of his leadership.
Sears claims the Republican voters made their voices very clear in this week’s midterms, largely rejecting Trump-backed candidates from coast to coast. Sears has previously been a strong supporter of Trump’s, but says she recognizes the will of the party’s voters.
“I could not support him. I just couldn’t,” Sears said. “A true leader understands when they have become a liability. A true leader understands that it’s time to step off the stage, and the voters have given us that very clear message.“We have a clear mission, and it is time to move on.”
The losses of Trump-endorsed candidates Tudor Dixon in Michigan and Dr. Mehmert Oz in Pennsylvania are just two of the key races lost by Trump picks, and some others hang in the balance as votes continue to be counted.
Arizona’s Kari Lake, a strong Trump ally, is currently neck-and-neck with Democrat Katie Porter for the state’s governorship, with Hobbs slightly ahead of Lake at the time of writing.
Trump is rumored to be planning an announcement about his 2024 presidential run in the coming week.
