Former House Speaker Paul Ryan refers to himself as a ‘Never Again Trumper’
Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) has distanced himself from former President Trump by referring to himself as a “Never-Again-Trumper.”
Ryan believes that Trump, who recently announced his 2024 presidential campaign, is “unelectable.”
Ryan served Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District for 20 years and was speaker of the House from 2015 to 2019.
Ryan told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” that Republicans need to “get past Trump” if they want to “start winning elections.”
“We stick with Trump; we keep losing elections. That’s just how I see it,” Ryan said. He noted that he’s not a “Never Trumper,” but does not believe that Trump could win the general election for presidency in 2024.
“I am a never-again-Trumper. Why? Because I want to win. And we lose with Trump. It was really clear to us in ’18, in ’20, and now in 2022,” Ryan said. “I think we have a great stable of good, capable conservatives who are more than capable of winning this primary for the presidency and winning the (general) election, and I think Republican voters know that.”
Ryan cited certain midterm losses of Trump-backed candidates in Arizona, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire and said that these races could have been won if “we had a typical and traditional conservative Republican, not a Trump Republican.”
During the interview, Ryan touted his new book, “American Renewal: A Conservative Plan to Strengthen the Social Contract and Save the Nation’s Finances.”
