Adam Schiff says there will be ‘chaos’ if Kevin McCarthy becomes House Speaker

Adam Schiff, joined by other Democrats and Republicans, have voiced their concern about turbulence and “chaos” if Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is elected as House Speaker.

In a Sunday interview, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called McCarthy a “weak leader” and predicted “chaos” among Republican leadership if he were elected to the role of House Speaker. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) agreed, saying that McCarthy would find himself “held hostage” by far-right Republicans and wouldn’t last long.

Last week, House Republicans chose McCarthy to lead them in the next Congress, after the GOP was able to gain 218 seats in the midterms, giving them control of the House. However, since 31 Republicans opposed his nomination, it is possible that McCarthy may not win the seat.

Kinzinger said on CNN’s “Face the Nation” that if McCarthy were to be elected speaker, he wouldn’t last.

“I think he has cut so many deals with bad people to get to this position that I think he’s not going to be a leader at all,” Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger is one of two Republicans on the House committee investigating the January 6 riots, Capitol and has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and other Republicans such as Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

“She will be newly empowered,” Kinzinger told CNN. “And the fact that she’s supporting Kevin McCarthy means that he’s made a lot of promises to her. Just, trust me, that’s how this business works.”

“I think [McCarthy] will be completely hostage to kind of the extreme wings of the Republican Party,” Kinzinger added.

“And I, frankly, don’t think he’s going to last very long. Maybe he will prove me wrong. But it’s sad to see a man that I think had so much potential just totally sell himself.”
