China – civil disorder!
Civil disorder has broken out in about a dozen cities in China, as its lockdown regime has caused ten deaths, and the people won’t accept it.
Incredible reports started coming out of China over the weekend, concerning civil disorder breaking out in about a dozen cities. The cause: SARS-CoV-2, and the Chinese government’s attempt to stamp it out by main force. Clearly it’s not working, or by now the Chinese would have relaxed their policy. They haven’t, and now the people have snapped. This has never happened to this degree in China, or not since the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989. This incident also recalls previous uprisings in Warsaw Pact countries.
The latest coming out of China
Reportage on the China uprisings comes from the Beeb and from Just the News. It may or may not be significant that Google Trends is absolutely silent on these events.
China employs the most stringent quarantine and other measures in the world, in an effort to stamp out SARS-CoV-2. The measures include locking people in their apartments. Despite that, cases of “Corona Virus Disease” have set all-time records.
The flash point seems to have come in the city of Urumqi, capital of the western Xinjiang region. Ten people died in a fire in a mid-rise apartment building.
The official word on the cause of the fire blames an electric outlet extension. This kind of attachment plugs into a wall outlet and usually triples the outlets available. Misuse of outlet extenders and extension cords is one of the most common causes of building fires worldwide.
The next day, protests broke out in Urumqi, on the theory that authorities kept people penned in the building.
Individual life is notoriously cheap in communist China and always has been in communist countries. The authorities must have expected the people to accept those deaths as the price of fighting the virus. They were mistaken.
By Sunday reports spoke of protests in Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, and Wuhan Protesters are sounding chants of “Xi Jinping, step down” and “Communist Party, step down.”
Unconfirmed videos from the protest zones
Several Twitter users, including some “blue checkmark” accounts, have video they say came from China. How this video is getting out, no one is doing more than speculate.
User “Wall Street Silver” led with this video on Saturday night. It shows people lining up to take tests for the virus – and appears to show a man in a white haz-mat suit carrying an apparent automatic weapon.
About fifteen hours later, another user said the weapon it showed was a replica.
But that didn’t mean that user doubted the account. The Chinese Communist Party, he said, do not normally issue deadly weapons to local police. So if someone is pretending to be heavily armed,
Police in China are struggling to keep control.
But Wall Street Silver had more, beginning with this tweet of protesters in Lanzhou dismantling virus testing booths.
Other users shared more video, from this one showing a haz-mat-suited man welding an outside door shut,
to “CCP officers” responding to protests in Chengdu,
to another street protest in Beijing.
In the most ironic twist yet, The Washington Post seems to have condemned the China lockdown policy. The controversial commentator Taylor Lorenz then condemned the Post, even though she’s on their payroll, according to The Daily Mail. She defended lockdowns as necessary because, she alleged, no one builds natural immunity to the virus. That didn’t go over well.

The disorders we are seeing in China rival the Hungarian revolt and the 1968 “Prague Spring,” in addition to Tiananmen Square. Clearly Xi Jinping has a serious decision to make. Equally clearly, the “Middle Kingdom” is weaker than it would like to admit, especially if it wants the world.
