Poll: Majority of Twitter users support Elon Musk’s management of platform
According to a poll, released on Monday, the majority of Twitter users support Elon Musk’s recent efforts to make Twitter a freer and more transparent platform.
The Trafalgar Group/Convention of States Action poll found that 62.6% of respondents are supportive of Musk’s work so far, while 37.4% said they were against what Musk has done.
The findings largely followed political lines, with 84.8% of Republicans supporting Musk’s management of Twitter, compared to only 17.1% of Democrats.
Musk bought the platform in October for $44 billion and has since made many controversial changes, including firing top executives, reinstating notable figures that were banned, and has recently released files pertaining to the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story.
“A strong majority of common-sense voters in both parties see what Elon Musk is doing with Twitter and understand it is incredibly good for the country and critical both for free speech and a free society. They understand that transparency is always in everyone’s best interest,” said Mark Meckler, the president of Convention of States.
He continued, “But what about the voters who register the opposite? Are they opposed to free speech and transparency? Perhaps some are, but we suspect many voters are stuck in the ‘red team v. blue team’ mentality, where they interpret their news based on personality—and whether or not that specific personality is part of their team—rather than looking at policy.”
“We believe a majority of Democrats in this poll oppose Elon Musk simply because they see his actions as harming Democrats,” Meckler said.
On Friday, Matt Taibbi, contributing editor at Rolling Stone, released “The Twitter Files,” opening up about the social media platform’s censorship of a New York Post story that discussed Hunter Biden’s laptop.
The Post previously reported how emails in Hunter’s laptop connected Joe Biden to his son’s foreign business dealings. In one email, a Ukrainian gas company reportedly thanked Hunter for “giving me an opportunity to meet your father.”
The poll surveyed a total of 1,085 respondents between Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 and has a 2.9% margin of error.
