Jan. 6th defendant pleads guilty to threatening Rep. Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter

A Texas man who was charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, pleaded guilty Monday to threatening Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter not long after the riot.
Ocasio-Cortez called for former President Donald Trump’s impeachment in the hours after the Capitol riot, tweeting: “Impeach.” Garret Miller replied to her tweet, saying: “Assassinate AOC.”
Miller also pled guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers, and admitted to intentionally forcing his hands on an officer when they removed him from the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Federal Judge Carl Nichols said, and Miller agreed, that Miller acted with “serious intent” at the time he posted the tweet and meant for it to be a “threat.”
Prosecutors previously said that after the Capitol riot that Miller had attempted to identify the police officer who fatally shot a Trump supporter on Jan. 6, with Miller allegedly saying that the officer “deserves to die” and won’t “survive long,” comparing the officer to a deer that was to be hunted. “He’s a prize to be taken,” Miller allegedly said. Miller also allegedly circulated pictures of a police officer that he believed to be responsible for the shooting.
His sentencing has been scheduled for Feb. 22, 2023.
