What We Know: Andrew Tate detained in Romania on charges of rape and human trafficking
Online influencer and former kickboxer Andrew Tate has been detained in Romania on charges of human trafficking, rape and forming an organized crime group, according to Romanian authorities.
Tate was arrested alongside his brother and two other suspects, who were reportedly Romanian citizens. The group was initially detained for 24 hours, but a court later ordered a 30-day detention amid an investigation into the men.
Prosecutors from Romania’s anti organized-crime unit announced the charges in a statement after raiding their properties in Bucharest. They said that the Tate brothers have been under criminal investigation since April.
“However, Andrew and Tristan Tate have the utmost respect for the Romanian authorities and will always assist and help in any way they can,” a spokesperson for Tate said.
According to the Romanian crime unit, six women who were allegedly sexually exploited by the organized criminal group have been in contact with authorities.
“The four suspects … appear to have created an organized crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialized websites for a cost,” prosecutors said. “They would have gained important sums of money.”
