UK woman who made false rape allegations is jailed for 8-and-a-half years
Eleanor Williams, 22, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after claiming she was the victim of an Asian grooming gang.
Williams posted pictures of herself on Facebook with a swollen eye and bruised cheek. She claimed that had been beaten, raped and trafficked by Asian men.
It later came out that Williams inflicted the injuries on herself using a hammer.
Three of the men accused by Williams tried to take their own lives following the accusations.
Mohammed Ramzan, who was falsely accused of both rape and sex trafficking, said he tried to commit suicide after being arrested.
“I still bear the scars to this day,” he said.
Ramzan spoke outside court following the sentencing of Williams.
“I am not sure how my family and I are going to recover from this”, but added they were “determined to move forward positively” with their lives.
Jordan Trengove, who was another of the falsely accused men, said that the word “rapist” had been sprayed on his house.
“I’ve not been able to leave the house, I’ve not been able to go to work,” he told Sky News after the sentencing.
Mr Trengove said it was a “relief” that Williams was jailed, however he wished the sentence “was a bit longer.”
Another victim Oliver Gardner said he was sectioned after a suicide attempt following his own suicide attempt.
The senior investigating officer, Doug Marshall, spoke to Sky News and said “I’ve had cases where people have told lies, but never to this extent.”
He went on to say that if Williams wasn’t charged, “it just wouldn’t have stopped.”
Judge Robert Altham said during the sentencing “It is troubling to say the least that she shows no significant signs of remorse.”
He referred to all of Williams’ accusations as “fiction.”
“Unless and until the defendant chooses to say why she has told these lies, we will not know,” he went on to say.
Williams’ mother, Allison spoke to Sky News and spoke about her emotions when the verdict was handed down: “I can’t describe it. I still can’t take it in really. It just doesn’t feel real. The person the press is portraying is not the person I know.”
Her mother didn’t dispute that her daughter had lied but stated “I believe she was just trying to get people to listen to her.”
Williams herself faced the judge and thanked him as she was sentenced.
