Trump returns to Facebook

Former President Donald Trump has returned to Facebook after being banned from the platform 2 years ago following the Capitol riots.

On Friday, Trump posted “I’m back” to his official page.

His last post on his Facebook page was made on 6 January 2021, when he wrote: “I am asking for everyone at the US Capitol to remain peaceful.”

The post included the quote Trump used at the start of his acceptance speech as President: “Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business.”  He also posted the same video to YouTube, who has also restored his account.

YouTube tweeted on Friday that “Starting today, the Donald J. Trump channel is no longer restricted and can upload new content.”

“We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run up to an election,” they wrote.

Trump’s return to Facebook coincides with his announcement that he will hold his first rally of his 2024 Presidential campaign in Waco, Texas on 25th March.

Meta restored Trump’s Facebook and Instagram pages in January, however he continued to post on his own social media website, Truth Social, which he set up following his ban.

“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad and the ugly – so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s vice president of global affairs, said back in January.

Elon Musk also restored Trump’s Twitter page following his takeover.

Musk called the ban on Mr. Trump’s account a “mistake” and “morally wrong”.

I wish people would stop using the word “riot” in relation to the Jan 6 2021 protest. If there had been a riot the Capital would have been burned to the ground.
