Judge in J6 case “exasperated” with Trump lawyers
Judge Tanya S. Chutkan let her “exasperation” show during the protective-order hearing in Donald Trump’s January 6 case.
From MSNBC and The Gateway Pundit came further insight into the courtroom dynamic at the protective-order hearing in the case charging Donald J. Trump with offenses relating to what he said on January 6, 2021. At one point the judge showed a lack of sympathy with Trump, a political opponent of the current President, facing felony charges relating to how that current President came into office.
Judge demonstrates her displeasure
On Friday (August 11), Judge Tanya Chutkan handed down a protective order governing what Trump may or may not say. That order did not give the government all it wanted – which was to treat absolutely all discovery as “sensitive.” But neither did it give Trump’s lawyers all the leeway they sought in deciding what was sensitive and insensitive.
Kristinn Taylor, reporting for The Gateway Pundit, prepared a partial transcript of an interview between Katie Phang, anchor for MSNBC, and Hugo Lowell, reporter for The Guardian who was present in court. Phang asked Lowell about “body language” between the judge and John Lauro, Trump’s lead counsel. (Trump himself did not appear at the hearing; Judge Chutkan waived his appearance from the start.)
Lowell said that at first Chutkan appeared sympathetic to Lauro’s arguments and position as a defense attorney. But when Lauro started to describe Trump’s status as a political opponent of the President facing a charge from that President, Chutkan “grew exasperated” and even buried her face in her hands and rolled her eyes. That prompted Lauro to change the subject.
As far back as April 2, 2022, The New York Times reported that President Biden wanted Trump to face prosecution. (The Washington Examiner cited that report.) According to that report, Biden wanted this done in late 2021. He further said he wanted Garland to act “less like a ponderous judge” and more like a prosecutor.
