Democrats v. Republicans – it’s about more than politics

Published

Remedies for a culture run amuck. Who are the soldiers of the cross?

The 2012 Democratic Party Platform stole some of the wind from Mr. Obama’s sails last week in their attempt to take God and Jerusalem out of their Platform. The Democrats later put them back in amidst much controversy. Well, Mr. Obama may have no one to blame but himself. The platform for the incumbent party usually comes from the sitting president.

Democrats v. Republicans: the God question

A cross, a bible, and an ancient undergound symbol. Suddenly Democrats and Republicans have stark differences on what these symbols mean.

The more interesting aspect of the “God” question is where the Democratic and Republican Parties differ ideologically. The inclusion or exclusion of God from any political party’s platform would be an argument that strangely enough would come down along party lines. Most likely, the Republicans would keep Him in and the Democrats without a directive on a teleprompter (as we witnessed at the Convention) would be split.

Whether it is Sandra Fluke arguing that the taxpayer is obligated to fund her sex life, or Andrew Tobias, Democratic National Committee Treasurer, extolling the virtues of same sex marriage, the Democrats – both politically and morally – have a consistently liberal philosophy. I have long been fascinated about how much God has influenced the philosophy of each political party – regardless of the celebrated separation of church and state. Whether we acknowledge it or not, and whether we like it or not, our spiritual life does influence our thought life. Hence it influences our political ideologies as well. So, I decided to do a comparison to illustrate this point.

Democrats v. Republicans: synopsis

Democratic Position Republican Position
Our rights come from Government Our rights come from God
We shouldn’t have to support Israel Israel is our friend and we should support her
Abortion is a woman’s right to choose. Some support partial birth abortion. A woman does not have the right to choose if her child lives or dies. Only God has that right – again, this goes back to our rights coming from God. Most Republicans believe that partial birth abortion is infanticide
Healthcare should be government funded. Religious institutions do not have the right to decide if they want to provide healthcare benefits that cover abortion and/or birth control. The government does not have the right to come between you and your doctor, and every employer has the right to choose what they include in their health care benefits package
Supports same-sex marriage Supports civil unions but believes in traditional marriage between a man and a woman.
Government must supply all our needs Government should provide an environment where people can work and pursue happiness.
Shared prosperity Everyone is entitled to the fruits of their own labor and taxes should be fairly imposed on all
Only government schools should be funded by taxpayer dollars School choice vouchers should be available and parents should be able to decide which school is best for their children
Environmental rules and regulations should trump energy development and impact individual property rights Environmental rules and regulations should be practical and property rights should not be intruded upon – unless extreme circumstances apply
We belong to government, and government knows best about everything Government works for us, and our representatives serve by our consent
Government should bail out failing industries and/or companies Industries and/or companies should fail or thrive under their own initiatives

As soon as I saw the title of this post I knew there would be strawmen galore. “Government must supply all our needs?” “We belong to government and government knows best about everything?” It would be difficult to find anyone who agrees with that among the most hardcore liberals, let alone mainstream Democrats. Most of the stuff in the left hand column will not be found in the Democratic Pary platform, or will be found along with significant limitations.

If you can find anything remotely resembling the phrase / concept “We belong to government, and government knows best about everything” in official Democratic policy I will personally change my vote to the Romney campaign.

“Government is all they talk about, and all they’re comfortable talking about.”

I would expect as much from a political party. If they started talking about, say, sports I’d be confused. That still wouldn’t excuse policy supporting ownership of citizens – if any existed.

Ever heard of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeffery Bezos? Some of the most successful and wide reaching businesses that thrive today were founded by democrats, so what do you mean by saying they don’t know anything about running a business?

Furthermore, if you are so certain that all they know is government, shouldn’t they then be the ones to govern, since thatls all they know?

Government shouldn’t be run like a business. Businesses only care about their bottom line, and don’t serve anyone but themselves. Government is intended to serve the people.

“Israel is our friend and we should support her”

“What’re you talking about?”

Jonathan Pollard, currently serving life in a federal nick in North Carolina for passing classified documents to Israel.

Fergus Mason

“The facts of that particular case cut both ways.”

No Terry, they do not. Jonathan Pollard, a US citizen, was trusted with classified information by the USA. He sold it without authorisation to a foreign power which was not entitled to have it. That is a disgusting offence, without any justification, and his life sentence is fully deserved.
