Rhode Island GOP Rep. under fire for Tweet about critical race theory
A prominent Republican Representative in Rhode Island, Patricia Morgan, has received criticism after she Tweeted on Tuesday that she lost a black friend over critical race theory.
Morgan’s Tweet read, “I had a black friend. I liked her and I think she liked me, too. But now she is hostile and unpleasant. I am sure I didn’t do anything to her, except be white. Is that what teachers and our political leaders really want for our society? Divide us because of our skin color? #CRT”
Commenters were quick to respond, and the Tweet spawned the hashtag #IHadAWhiteFriend, which users added to their Tweets pointing out both real life and satirical inconsistencies in the shared experience of white and black people.
Rhode Island politicians also responded to Morgan’s Tweet. BLM RI PAC, the political action arm of Black Lives Matter in Rhode Island, publicly called for Morgan’s removal from her committees as a result of the Tweet.
Earlier this year Morgan unsuccessfully co-sponsored a bill to restrict the teaching of racial topics in state schools.
