Donald Trump wins CPAC conservative meeting’s 2024 presidential straw poll
Former President Donald Trump stomped the competition in an informal straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this weekend.
The poll asked who conservatives would support in a GOP primary for president in 2024.
According to CNN, 59% of CPAC attendees said they would vote for Donald Trump if he ran for president in the 2024 Republican primary. Coming in second was Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 28% of the vote. Former Secretary of State Mike Pomopeo received 2% of the votes. Despite these results, the survey does not represent the majority of registered Republican voters.
When compared to the CPAC voting results of 2021, Trump’s lead has decreased from 70% to 59%. DeSantis only reached 21% of the votes last year. However, it is clear that if Trump does not run in 2024, DeSantis would become the top pick for CPAC attendees.
Both Trump and DeSantis spoke at the conservative conference this weekend. However, Senator Rand Pual, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, former U.S. ambassador the U.N. Nikki Haley, Senator Ted Cruz, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and former Vice President Mike Pence received 1% of the vote.
