Authorities announced on Friday that the 22 year old soccer star from Stanford University, Katie Meyer, who was found dead on campus earlier this week, committed suicide.

The County of Santa Clara announced on Thursday that Meyer’s death was “self-inflicted,” and that the County would not be releasing any further information about the case at this time. Meyers’ death is being investigated by the Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office in Santa Clara County.

The team captain and goalkeeper’s death prompted an outpouring of grief on campus, where she was studying international relations and history. A statement from the university reads, “Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world,” the statement continued. “Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits.”

“I am heartbroken. I had the honor to play alongside Katie for a season & she inspired not only me but everyone else around her. Your amazing heart & smile will be missed. Sending love to her friends & family,” posted Meyers’ former teammate Lauren Sesselmann.
