BuzzFeed News app permanently shuts down following annual losses
After a week of rumors, BuzzFeed News announced late on Friday afternoon it would be shutting down for good.
While the regular BuzzFeed app will remain active, the BuzzFeed News app sent its last Tweet on Friday, telling users, “Well, folks, today’s the last day of the BuzzFeed News app. Thanks for the memories and see y’all out there.”
The News division of BuzzFeed had been bleeding money for years, reportedly losing about $10 million a year. After BuzzFeed News went public in December, shares tanked and the former editor-in-chief Mark Schoofs and other high-ranking employees left.
A push notification sent earlier in the week advised BuzzFeed News app users they could continue to follow any news BuzzFeed puts out via its regular app, but that it was “the end of the road” for the News app.
