Poll: 71 percent of Americans do not want President Biden to run again in 2024

A new Harvard CAPS–Harris poll shows current US President Joe Biden is not a desirable candidate for the next presidential election in 2024, and most Americans would consider a third party candidate if faced with another Trump-Biden competition.
The poll showed the overwhelming majority of respondents did not think Joe Biden should run for a second term in the next general election, the reasons for their opinion varied. A third of respondents believe Biden, who turns 80 later this year, will be too old to continue on for another term. Another 45 percent say they think he should skip another run because he is a bad president, while 25 percent of respondents would simply like to see another candidate run.
“President Biden may want to run again but the voters say ‘no’ to the idea of a second term, panning the job he is doing as president. Only 30 percent of Democrats would even vote for him in a Democratic presidential primary,” said co-director of CAPS-Harvard polling Mark Penn.
Former president Trump’s response to a possible run in 2024 met with a slightly better response, with 61 percent of respondents to the poll saying that they would not like to see Trump run again in the next general election.
With Trump’s popularity seemingly waning, and Biden’s support for a second term low, 60 percent of poll respondents said they would consider a “moderate third party candidate” if Biden and Trump become the Democratic and Republican nominees in the next general election. President Biden’s approval ratings have been low, and the CAPS-Harvard poll shows “Biden’s approval on management of issues is weak across the board.”
Presidential candidates will not be the only ones tackling low popularity with voters in 2024. The poll also showed approval of the job Congress is doing at a record low of only 28 percent.
