Over 50 House Republicans call for President Biden to take a cognitive test

In a letter to President Joe Biden this week, over 50 House Republicans urged the president to take a cognitive test to prove his fitness for leadership, citing former president Donald Trump having taken one and publicly releasing the results.

The group of 54 House Representatives – all Republican – were led by GOP Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas in their call for the president to submit to a cognitive test and release the results.

“We again write to you to express concern with your current cognitive state and to urge you to submit to a cognitive test immediately,” the letter reads. “We believe that, regardless of gender, age, or political party, all Presidents should follow the example set by former President Trump to document and demonstrate sound mental abilities.” The letter continues to express that Republicans are “worried about [the president’s] mental abilities.”

The Republican lawmakers are not the only ones concerned about the president’s cognitive health, as a New York Times/Siena College poll released this week showed voters are most concerned with Biden’s age when it comes to prospects of his running for a second term.

Of voters who did not want Biden to run for reelection, 33 percent cited his age as the number one reason for wanting someone else to run. Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term if he won reelection.

“The American people should have absolute confidence in their President, knowing that he or she can perform their duties as Head of State and Commander in Chief,” the letter, which cites a cognitive test former President Donald Trump took while in office, says. “They deserve full transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader.”
