Pelosi makes first public comment on husband’s attack; footage will not yet be released

Last week, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made her first public appearance on-camera following the attack on her husband Paul. Pelosi spoke about the recovery period for her husband and anticipates that “It’s going to be a long haul.”

Pelosi spoke on a virtual Democrat Party fundraiser Friday called ‘Strengthening Our Democracy’ and provided an update on her husband’s condition.

Pelosi said: “Paul came home yesterday. That enables me to be at home with all of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you for kind words, your prayers and your good wishes for Paul.”

“It’s going to be a long haul, but he will be well. And, it’s just so tragic how it happened, but nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. He’s surrounded by family, so that’s a wonderful thing,” Pelosi said.

She also called on activists and voters to help Democrats retain control of the House and Senate, saying that both are “very winnable.” 

“People say to me, ‘What can I do to make you feel better?’ I say: ‘Vote!’” Pelosi told those on the call.

“What we are doing is not only to win an election, but this is to strengthen our democracy,” Pelosi added. “There is no question that our democracy is on the ballot.”

David DePape, 42, is currently in custody and has been denied bail. He is being hoeld on state charges of attempted murder, burglary and elder abuse. 

DePape’s public attorney, Adam Lipson, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf earlier this week and has promised to do all he can do defend his client. Lipson declined to make any further comments.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has signalled that bodycam footage of the incident will not be released to the public at this time.

“For us, revealing that evidence through the media is just not what we think is appropriate. We want to make sure that this individual is held accountable for these egregious acts. For us, we’re going to make sure that we limit the evidence as much as possible in order to get that done,” Jenkins recently told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
